Pleasant Hill Cemetery has been a place of remembrance and community heritage for more than 150 years. On September 17, 1872, W.T. and J.W. Turner deeded four acres of land to be used for a non‑denominational church, a school, and other community purposes.
The property sits on a hill overlooking the Gibbons Creek Valley, a setting that likely inspired the name “Pleasant Hill.” Within the original parcel was the grave site of their father, David Turner, who had died only a month earlier. From that beginning, the site became known as Pleasant Hill Church and Cemetery, serving both the spiritual and community needs of the area.
By 1902, several families had moved a few miles west to the Dry Creek community, and the church was relocated to the schoolhouse there. The cemetery, however, remained in its original location and continued to serve as the primary burial ground for families throughout the region.
In 1906, the nearby town of Carlos became the center of population after the Houston and Texas Central Railway established a station there. As the community grew, Pleasant Hill naturally became the principal cemetery serving the surrounding area. Many Turner descendants and their spouses are buried there, along with members of other families who settled in western Grimes County during the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.
In 1964, 0.83 acres of the original land were sold by the Pleasant Hill Church and Cemetery Association, the earliest documentation currently found referencing the Association.
In 1977, Elvina and E.F. “Bubba” Butts donated an additional 1.27 acres to expand the cemetery grounds. Clear title to this property was conveyed to the Association by the Texas Municipal Power Agency in 1997.
Today more than 150 graves are located in Pleasant Hill Cemetery, including three Confederate Civil War veterans and veterans of later wars. Nearby, the David and Sarah Turner cabin has been preserved at Boonville Heritage Park in Bryan, Texas.
